Patent System and Patentability in Life Science

Area Science Park organizes 2 seminars on the Patent System and Patentability in Life Science, specifically designed for scientists.

Seminars will be held in English at Area Science Park’s Congress Centre with a hybrid format.

THE SPEAKER
The speaker is Mr. David Alves, a European Patent Office Young Professional who is attending his secondment period by Area Science Park Patlib Center. David has BSc in Biochemistry and a MSc in Bioengineering and Nanosystems. Before starting his Patent Examination traineeship he performed several research internship by the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica, Oeiras, Portugal and in Sungkyunkwan University (South Korea).

 

SEMINAR ONE
THE PATENT SYSTEM & COMPUTER IMPLEMENTED INVENTIONS
Wednesday, May 15, 2024 - 14:00-16:00
• Inventions and Patents
• Patentability requirements
• Basics elements of patent information
• Advice regarding how to interpret patent documentation and filter out information §
• Key points to consider when intending to patent a potential invention (such as disclosure of possibly sensitive to the public for example)
• General overview on computer implemented inventions and their patentability

 

SEMINAR TWO
PATENTABILITY IN LIFE SCIENCES
Wednesday, May 22, 2024 - 14:00-16:00
• Exceptions and exclusions to patentability in biomedical and biotechnological inventions
• Sufficiency of disclosure - how to ensure the invention is properly disclosed (this can concern DNA sequences, biological material, chemical compounds, "reach-through claims" or antibodies)
• Examples of patent applications and common issues found regarding claim structure or other aspects (it could publicly available I've personally worked on or others)

At the end of SEMINAR TWO, Maddalena Furlan, WP10 leader, will present the “Intellectual Property and Market Helpdesk” developed by Area Science Park Patlib Center in the frame of PRP@CERIC and available to all the scientists participating in the project.
