Short or long term research visa  may be granted to researchers upon the submission of a hosting agreement signed with either private or public research institutions acknowledged in an official list set up by the Ministry for University and Research (MUR).

The hosting agreement defines the research project, previoulsy approved by the hosting organisation, that the researcher will be entitled to carry out. It lays down also the working conditions offered.

The visa is issued upon an entry clearance (nulla osta) that the hosting organisation required through and on-line procedure.
