Driving licences issued by any Eu Member State are recognised throughout the Eu.
They are valid on the Italian territory, provided that the licence is valid, it is not suspended or restricted and has not been revoked in the issuing country. You can drive with your current licence as long as it remains valid.
Once the validity period has expired, you must convert the foreign driver's license at a Motorizzazione Civile office. The conversion can also be requested before the expiration date. The new licence may have a different validity period and will be subject to any restrictions /conditions that apply in Italy.
Holders of an EU driving license with no expiration date, or with an expiration date exceeding the limits set by European Union regulations, must convert their foreign license within two years of acquiring residence in Italy. This obligation also applies to those residing in Italy who are subject to a driving license review (revisione) procedure.
If the license to be converted has expired, or is otherwise no longer valid for driving in Italy, it is still possible to submit a conversion application
