This kind of registration is valid for 12 months only and ONLY for Italian/Eu/EEA citizens. 

It might be renewed for another period of time provided that the conditions are still met.

When appliying specify that you want to be registered as temporary resident (Anagrafe cittadini temporaneamente presenti) and take with you the following documents:

• valid Passport or ID
• certificate of attendance issued by the institution you are enrolled in or documents proving your professional position (i.e. work contract, study/research  grant, etc.) or work contract 
  
• Italian tax identification number (Codice Fiscale)
• proof of valid health insurance (EHIC, private health insurance translated in Italian, registration to the Italian Health system)
• rental contract (registered at Agenzia delle Entrate)
