Foreigners holding a visa for study (long term Type D) have to apply for the permit of stay for study purposes by 8 days from the arrival in Italy. Study residence permit is issued for undergraduate, graduate and post graduate studies, PhD, etc.
How to apply for first issue/renewal?
1. Mod 209 Form 1 filled out (download the instructions).
2. A revenue stamp (marca da bollo) of € 16.00. It can be bought at any newsagent's and tobacconist's (tabaccaio) where cigarettes are sold
3. Copy of the passport
4. Copy of the study programme/Admission or Enrollment letter from the school/host institution and proof of succesfull passed examinations (for renewal only)
5. Proof of sufficient means of subsistence (i.e. statement from your school/host institution certifying the amount of your fellowship and a bank/post statement). The amount must not be lower than the annual Italian social allowance (€6.947,33 for 2024)
6. Copy of the insurance policies valid for Italy which covers you in case of illness and injury for the entire period of validity of the permit of stay
7. Copy of the Italian tax identification number (codice fiscale) (not mandatory for the first issue)
8. Receipt of the postal giro slip for the payment of €30.46 (plus the administrative contribution of €40 if you apply for a 1 year permit or if you renew for more than 3 months, to be paid in the same postal giro slip, so €70,46 summing up). You have to pay it upon submission of your application at the post office by using the postal giro slip in the kit. See the example on how to fill it out.
9. Proof of accommodation (i.e tenancy agreement, admission letter in students’residence, declaration of hospitality, etc.)
10. Copy of the property disposal (Dichiarazione di ospitalità) (ask your host/landlord)
11. Copy of the expiring permit (FOR RENEWAL ONLY)
N.B. The postal fee to send the kit is €30.

At fingerprinting appointment, you might be asked to sign the Integration Agreement form.
